St. Teresa of Avila - 2007

By Ruth Bertels

Dear Friends,

If memory were serving me better, I would be able to tell you the author of a quote that appears to me to encapsulate the hunger of our people today, of whatever religious persuasion: “The greatest need in today’s world is for the virtue of courage.”

Makes sense, doesn’t it? We can read the books, study the commentators, begin to form a vision of our part in creating a better Church, nation, world, but without courage to get us moving, we’ll be spinning our wheels, waiting for someone to take us by the hand and lead us into the real, but mixed-up world.

On October 15th, we’ll be celebrating the life of a saint with the kind of courage we long for, St. Teresa of Avila, and for that reason, the four articles on her life are being posted again as an example of the kind of courage we need in our homes, work places, schools, legislatures, chancery offices, wherever people of good will, tall and short, are gathered, seeking a common vision and the collective courage to bring genuine holiness and wholeness to everyday lives.

She was a woman of faith, of prayer, of courage and action. A woman for our time. May her example give us both courage and hope. Amen
