For the Likes of Me

By Ruth Bertels

In a little country church, in a little country town,
lived an old man,
Who visited the little church every afternoon
for about an hour.
He would just sit in a pew and look at the Crucifix
above the altar.

One day, the parish priest asked the old man
how he prayed when he was in church.
The old man said:

“I don’t pray. I just sit and look at the Crucifix,
and say to myself:

“Imagine the likes of Him
Doing the likes of that
For the likes of me.”
