James Patrick Shannon, our Reluctant Dissenter

By Ruth Bertels

On August 27, former auxiliary bishop of St. Paul-Minneapolis, James Patrick Shannon, suffered a heart attack, and came to the end of his earthly pilgrimage at the age of 82.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Ruth, whose love and courage supported him day after day, and who, in turn, was loved and strengthened by him. They lived united lives; they lived separate lives, neither smothering nor abandoning one another on pilgrimage.

We have brought up from the Archives the series of articles based upon Shannon’s autobiography, Reluctant Dissenter, with the hope and prayer that readers, who are seeing them for the first time, will know the blessing that comes to all of us when pilgrims face their journeys with courage and sense of purpose.

And to those familiar with Shannon’s life, may these writings serve as comfort, knowing that they are not alone in their human grief over this great man’s leaving us, while reminding one another that he will always be near us, near to the Church he loved and served with such generosity and sacrifice.

Rest, dear Bishop, priest, and layman. Peace be to you. Amen.
